Perspective in life is important. It’s easy to let life’s little challenges distract us from the big challenge of living the life we want. And we can lose sight of how our relationships and experiences shape our life story. So we must strive to live with purpose, courageously and passionately. That was the message from a moving article we came across recently titled, Powerful Advice From A Dying Man.
“I am only 24 years old, yet I have already chosen my last tie.” The emotional story began. “It’s the one that I will wear on my funeral a few months from now.” We found the article on Wimp.com, a site that features inspiring and shareable stories. It recounts an emotional letter written by a young man coming to grips with a diagnosis of terminal cancer.
What made this story so inspiring is the way this man sought to give his life meaning by sharing his realizations in hopes they would benefit others. Those realizations about life, he said, became much more clear as he began to understand how valuable time truly is. Below is the advice we took to heart most:
Don’t waste your time on work that you don’t enjoy. It is obvious that you cannot succeed in something you don’t like. Patience, passion, and dedication come easily only when you love what you do.
Take control of your life. Take full responsibility for the things that happen to you. Limit bad habits and try to lead a healthier life. Find a sport that makes you happy. Most of all, don’t procrastinate.
Let your life be shaped by decisions you made, not by the ones you didn’t.Appreciate the people around you. Your friends and relatives will always be an infinite source of strength and love. That is why you shouldn’t take them for granted.
The letter concludes with this call to action. “Fight for what you believe in and write the great story of your life. The place we are leaving is a beautiful playground, where everything is possible. Make it interesting. Make it count!” We couldn’t agree more.
